Domestic Violence

"Domestic violence" or "spousal abuse" is defined in California as "any harmful or offensive touching, however slight". Domestic violence cases range from the absurdly minimal (putting gum on a spouse during an argument or spitting) to the severe (significant physical injury). Even the slightest cases can carry significant penalties, however. In most cases judges will issue a temporary restraining order (even against the parties' will) and prosecutors will demand years of classes and probation, thousands of dollars in fines, hundreds of hours of community service and often, jail time.
